 Compton Theatre and Cinema Organ
34
Compton Theatre and Cinema Organ
Compton Theatre and Cinema Organ A 3 manual 13 rank Compton cinema organ ex Graham Whitehead at Napton Nickelodeon and afterwards at Ashorne Hall Warwickshire. This organ was new in 1933 and installed at the Granada, Hove. It was removed in 1936 and enlarged by its makers to 3 manual 13 rank. It was then installed at The Regal ,Hammersmith , London where it remained until 1947. In 1980 it was acquired by Graham Whitehead who again enlarged and overhauled it prior to installing it in his new village chapel venture "Napton Nickelodeon" where it was regularly played by organist Ken Stroud and by most of the other big name organists of the day with some of them still playing today. (Nicholas Martin, Robert Woolf, etc) The organ was particularly used to accompany silent movies and period news reels. and it was a great success. Graham moved his entire collection to Ashorne Hall near Warwick in 1989 and the Compton was re installed there, most of the work being done by Paul Camps with help from Graham. Following the sad and untimely death of Graham Whitehead in November 2003 everything was auctioned by Christies in March 2004. The Compton has been in good storage in Brussels ever since the farewell concert when it was in fine form and was played by Craig Boswell who had been resident organist at Ashorne Hall since it first opened. An amateur DVD of this farewell concert is available The chambers need to be approx 10 feet deep by 14 feet long each chamber by 12 feet high. The blower would need a small house outside approx 8 feet by 8 feet by 9 feet high. This organ has the benefit of a modern midi play back and record system so it can be played even when no organist is available. The system might need some minor updating as it was installed 20 years ago and technology is continually advancing. The console and organists seat change colour from blue to green to yellow to red to violet, etc as the organ is being played. GB

 The Phonoliszt Violina Model A
56
The Phonoliszt Violina Model A
Hupfeld Phonoliszt Violina Model A The Phonoliszt Violina was first presented at the Leipzig trade fair in 1908 and was the sensation and therewith an instant commercial successfor the company. For the first time the inventors achieved to reproduce mechanically the sound of a violin with all its fine details. Staccato, legato, glissando, vibrato, tremolo etc. are reproduced by complicated technical devices, which control the speed of the bow, the pressure of the violins against the bow and the simulation of the human fingers. It was a revolutionary to replace the bow with a bow-wheel, which turned in different speeds and was strung octagonal with 1336 horsehairs. Each of the 3 violins is playing one note only: D, A, and E, while the Phonoliszt Piano plays the accompaniment and melody. Over 10’000 Violinas have been produced between 1908 and 1928 and approximately only 85 did survive. Hupfeld designed three types of cases in those years, whereby the Model B was the most popular one. Only 65 pieces of Model B, about 12 of Model A and only 1 of Model C survived. The price for a Model B is around CHF 400000 to 500000 and therewith the price for a Hupfeld Violina at the time was more than for a house. Nevertheless at the right location the investment paid back within 2 years and therefore was a big commerial success for all parties involved. In the past 20 years three different projects came up with about 24 reproduction Phonolistzs. The Wendel Phonolisztis is the only one which can play standard Phonoliszt rolls. Only with huge financial and time invest they did achieve the same results as Hupfeld 80 years earlier. 101,0 x 64,0 x 38,0 in. Germany, c. 1912. CH

Bentley MK VI, 1949
Bentley MK VI, 1949 totally restored in 2012 with extensive photo documentation, veterans tested in 2015, 500km since new engine. Info: The Bentley Mark VI is an automobile from Bentley which was produced from 1946 to 1952.. The Mark VI 4-door standard steel sports saloon was the first post-war luxury car from Bentley. Announced in May 1946 and produced from 1946 to 1952 it was also both the first car from Rolls-Royce with all-steel coachwork and the first complete car assembled and finished at their factory. These very expensive cars were a genuine success, long-term their weakness lay in the inferior steels forced on them by governments post-war controls. Chassis continued to be supplied to independent coachbuilders. Four-door Saloon, two-door saloon and drophead coupe models with bodies by external companies were listed by Bentley along with the Bentley-bodied saloon. This Bentley factory finished car was given the name Bentley Mark VI standard steel sports saloon. This shorter wheelbase chassis and engine was a variant of the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith of 1946 and, with the same standard steel body and a larger boot became the cautiously introduced Silver Dawn of 1949. The same extended-boot modification was made to the Mark VI body in 1952 and the result became known as the R type Bentley. (Source: wikipedia). CH

Rolls Royce Experimental Silver Wraith by Park Ward, 41 EX, LWB, 1954

Rolls Royce Experimental Silver Wraith by Park Ward, 41 EX, LWB, 1954
Rolls Royce Experimental Silver Wraith by Park Ward, 41 EX, LWB, 1954The car was new to Rolls Royce experimental / research department in 1954 and was used by them to test new developments until approx 1957 at the end of which it had been fully updated to the latest specification with the current engine, power steering and air conditioning to name but a few points. It is all detailed in a log book kept at the RREC headquarters which they guard jealously but will allow pre arranged inspection and notes to be taken. The car is well reported in the rare 1986 book by Ian Rimmer entitled " Rolls Royce and Bentley Experimental Cars" After leaving the experimental department at Crewe it became the personal car of the manager of the London service depot and was then passed to the school of instruction for the apprentices and others to be instructed on maintenance. There it was re-painted green and silver (originally it was blue and silver) and re-trimmed in dark grey/blue. Still in the ownership of Rolls Royce it was sent back to Crewe where it was bought by Ian Rimmer who had just retired from a senior position in the Company. Ian kept it for a long time but with little use and eventually sold it in 2009. Additional notes by the seller: 1) The car is located in Cyprus where it was brought in early 2015 with the intention of doing restoration work here. It is duty paid into Cyprus but it has not been registered for use in Cyprus. The car still has its original UK registration number and UK paperwork so it can readily be exported from Cyprus with only the expense of the shipping charges 2) To maintain originality the paintwork should be refinished in its original colours of blue and silver. 3) I have now selected the top quality grey /blue leather for the interior trim and it can be very quickly ordered from the supplier in Scotland. 4) The interior woodwork has now been very beautifully refinished in England and it is paid for and awaiting shipment back to Cyprus. 5) I have obtained from the RREC library a full photocopy of the original log book for 41EX. This amounts to 98 very large pages with detailed daily notes of the full history of the car whilst it was with the experimental department. The original of this most interesting log book is jealously guarded at The Hunt House and is not allowed to be taken away. 6) This was the very first Rolls Royce car to be fitted with power steering and air conditioning. I am not proposing to restore the air conditioning but it should be possible for a future owner to have it put into working order if required. 7) Normally Rolls Royce never sold their experimental cars so this one is very rare in having been kept in Rolls Royce ownership for many years and then it slipped through the net via a sale to a member of the experimental staff -- Ian Rimmer. 8) I would very much prefer to sell the car "as is" with the possibility to complete the paintwork and trim for an additional estimated figure of ca.? 35000. However I believe the car to have had a high standard of maintenance and that no extensive work will be required other than normal re commissioning after a long period of being unused. The engine runs very nicely and the car could be driven before we stripped it down ready for painting, etc. CYPRUS
