Rudolph Wurlitzer

Rudolph Wurlitzer was a German immigrant and started to do business in 1856 with
his capital of $ 700, buying and selling musical instruments in Cincinnati. In 1890 the Ru-
dolph Wurlitzer Company was incorporated and eventually moved to North Tonawanda,
N.Y. ¬ - an incredible success story began. Starting with small barrel organs and self-playing
pianos Wurlitzer soon became the leading orchestrion builder in the United States. This in
big part was thanks to a cooperation with Philipps – one of Germany’s leading manufactur-
er of orchestrions. Two sons of Rudolph Wurlitzer visited in 1902 the annual Leipzig Trade
Fare, which resulted in importing over 1000 Philipps Pianella instruments until about 1914.
Around this time Wurlitzer decided to manufacture their own orchestrion line and started
to fit Philipp parts into their own designed cabinets. From Barrel to Band-Organs, from Pi-
anellas to huge Mandolin PianOrchestras, from Theatre Photoplayers to the largest Cinema
Organs and finally to the most famous Juke Box manufacturer in the world. The Doring Col-
lection houses two very nice Wurlitzer and one Philipps instruments.
