Ludwig Hupfeld AG

The Ludwig Hupfeld AG was the largest manufacturer of mechanical musical instru-
ments in the world. It all started in 1892 when Ludwig Hupfeld took over J.M. Grob & Co and
formed the Ludwig Hu pfeld AG in 1904 to build the new factories in Böhlitz-Ehrenberg for
around two million gold marks. The company employed thousands in a factory building of
100’000 square meters just outside of Leipzig. Examples of most major Hupfeld instruments
survive in collections today. The most wanted Hupfeld instruments today are the Hupfeld
Phonoliszt with the 3 violins, the Super Pan and the Helios line. Of these instruments may be
a few over hundred survived worldwide. Hupfeld Pianos were manufactured till 2009, when
the company declared Chapter 11.
