The music box was probably invented by Antoine
Favre, Geneva, for pocket watches and snuff boxes. Ac-
cording to Arthur Ord-Hume it was David Lecoultre of
Brassus, Switzerland who invented the cylinder in the
most familiar sense. In any case it was the Swiss, who
dominated the world market for cylinder music boxes
till around 1900, when the disc music box took over. You
now were no longer restricted to the pinned music on
a cylinder and you could buy the latest hit and play it
on your machine. The Rolls Royce of music boxes were
manufactured by Nicole Fr?res, Geneva and by far the
best music was arranged and reproduced by an Over-
ture Music Box. Mostly with only four melodies but with
a very narrow comb, giving a much larger scale for the
arranger and with the fat cylinder a much longer play
time. This is a very fine example, with beautiful marque-
try to the case and a nice selection of Mozart, Handel
and Haydn melodies.
