Blaise Bontems (1814 - 1881) was the first inventor who achieved to really reproduce
mechanically the singing of birds. Born in Ménil, France he moved his business around 1850
to Paris and in 1854 to the Rue de Clery, 72 in Paris. His birdcages were not ment to be toys or
novelties- no they were a piece of art for the rich and famous of the second half of the 19th
century. This specific bird cage was manufactured for a public place and therefore has a coin
mechanism to activate the “singing”. With 3 singing birds this is a very rare piece and still in
perfect condition. Probably manufactured by his son – Charles Bontems.
